proof positive #1: Gift Catalogue

An uplifting new offer approach expands the donor base and brings unprecedented revenues

Opportunity

World Vision Canada—known for child sponsorship and emergency relief efforts in the fight against poverty worldwide—wanted to target new prospects and engage current donors in new ways.

Approach

The World Vision Canada Gift Catalogue was launched in 2001 as the perfect way for donors to make their holidays truly meaningful, touch the hearts of loved ones, and bring lasting change to children and families in need. It quickly became clear that this was a great way to not only engage individuals, but also groups such as churches, schools and corporations. With each year came new learnings, and our strategy evolved accordingly.

The catalogue’s festive holiday cover incorporates best practices in logo, slap-dot highlighting, URL and phone number optimization. “Square-inch analysis” (squinch) is used to ensure maximum effectiveness of product spreads throughout. The book serves as the centerpiece of a broad integrated campaign that includes French and Chinese versions, space ads, media inserts, emails and group giving kits segmented for schools, churches and businesses.

Results

As of 2007, the World Vision Canada Gift Catalogue has:

Become the number-one charity catalogue in Canada

Brought in $17.6 million last year alone, making it one of the single largest revenue generator in the organization’s history

Acquired 1,944 child sponsors, representing an additional $3 million in long-term income
